About this salt

Bless This Home salt is for a new start at home. People pick it up the day they get the keys to a new place, when a baby is coming home, or after a hard season under one roof: a loss, a divorce, months of arguing. It is used to ask God's blessing on the house and on everyone who will live there.

The old way is to bless a house while it is still empty. Before the furniture comes in, a little salt goes in the four corners of every room, starting at the back of the house and ending at the front door. A thin line goes across the threshold the first night, and many keep a pinch under the doormat from then on. When others lived in the house first, families often mop the floors with a pinch of salt in the water before they unpack, from the back of the house out the front door.

After a week, the corners are swept out the front door, and the pinch under the doormat is changed once a month. Many Catholic families renew the blessing every year at Epiphany, January 6, when the doorway is marked with blessed chalk, and that is a good day to put down fresh salt. Its candles are white and blue, the blue of the Virgin's mantle.

Ways to use

The empty house
Before you move in, sprinkle a little in the four corners of each room, back of the house first, front door last.
The first night
Sprinkle a thin line across the front door and light a white or blue candle in the main room.
Under the doormat
Keep a pinch under the front doormat. Change it once a month, and on January 6 when you renew the blessing.
Mopping the floors
In a house where others lived first, add a pinch to the mop water. Mop from the back to the front door and throw the water out to the street.

Goes with

When a house has been through something heavy, add Cleansing to the mop water first, then lay the salt and light a white candle with a few drops of Bless This Home oil. Full Protection goes on the door frame, and Peace at Home keeps the calm once the family settles in.
