About this oil

Bless This Home is for a new start at home. People pick it up when they move into a new place or bring a baby home. They also use it after a hard time: a loss, a divorce or a long season of arguments, when the family wants to start over. It is used to ask God's blessing on the home and everyone who lives there.

It follows the way the Church blesses a house: holy water at the door, a cross over the frame, a picture of the Sacred Heart in the entry. Some Catholic families renew the blessing each year at Epiphany, when the doorway is marked with blessed chalk. Its candles are white and blue, the blue of the Virgin's mantle. The oil is blue.

Ways to use

On doors and windows
Trace a small cross with the oil at the top of the front door frame and put a drop on each side. Ask a blessing on everyone who comes and goes through it.
In mop water and around the house
After the move-in cleaning, add a few drops to the mop water. Mop from the front door toward the back, room by room, so the blessing comes in.
On a candle
Put a few drops on a white or blue seven-day candle and light it in the main room on the first night. Set a picture of the Sacred Heart or the Virgin beside it.
On the altar and saint statues
If the house has an altar, put a drop on the base of the statue and on its candle each year when you renew the blessing.
