About this oil
Cleansing is used to clear out what has built up in a home. People use it after an argument, after a funeral or a hard season, or after visitors who left the place feeling heavy. It is also used when moving into a home where other people lived. Many people use it before any other oil, so they start with a clean altar in a clean house.
It comes from the limpia, the spiritual cleansing of Mexico and Central America, with rue, rosemary, basil and a glass of water on the altar. People use it in the morning with the windows open, often on a Tuesday or Friday, the traditional days for a limpia. Its candle is white. The oil is clear, with a frankincense and myrrh scent.
Ways to use
- In mop water and around the house
- Open the windows, then add a few drops to a bucket of water and mop each room from the back of the house toward the front door. Throw the water outside when you finish.
- On a candle
- Put a few drops on a white seven-day candle and set a glass of fresh water beside it. When the candle burns out, pour the water out the front door.
- On doors and windows
- When the floor is dry, put a drop on the front door frame and on the corners of each windowsill. This closes the house up again once it is clear.
- On the altar and saint statues
- Before you set up a new altar or move an old one, wipe the shelf clean. Then put a few drops on the white candle that goes on it first.
