About this salt

St. Michael salt is for devotion to the archangel who defends against evil, the prince of the heavenly host. People pick it up when the house feels heavy, when they believe someone has sent harm their way, or when a son or daughter goes out each day to dangerous work. Many pray the prayer of Pope Leo XIII, “St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle,” as they put it down.

Salt for St. Michael goes at the ways into the house: a thin line across the threshold of the front door and the back door, a little in the four corners of each main room, and a pinch under the doormat. Some also keep a small dish of it beside his statue or holy card. When the house has been through something heavy, mop first with a pinch of salt in the water, from the back of the house to the front door, and throw the water out to the street.

Tuesday is the day traditionally set aside for the holy angels, so many sweep the old salt out the front door every Tuesday and put down fresh. His feast is September 29, with Gabriel and Raphael, and his novena ends the night before. His candles are blue or red, with a white one beside them for peace.

Ways to use

Every door
Sprinkle a thin line across the front door and the back door, praying to him by name at each one.
The four corners
Put a little in the four corners of each main room, starting at the back of the house.
Under the doormat
Keep a pinch under the front doormat and change it with the rest of the salt.
Every Tuesday
Sweep the old salt out the front door toward the street, put down fresh, and light his candle.

Goes with

When something has been sent against the house, clear it first with Uncrossing in the mop water. Then lay the salt and light a candle with a few drops of St. Michael oil, and put Full Protection or Keep Away Evil on the door frame.
