About this oil
Keep Away Evil is the oil people use when something bad has settled in: envy from a neighbor, the evil eye on a new baby or a new business, a heavy feeling in the house after a certain visitor. It is used to sweep that out and keep it from coming back through the door. Most customers ask for it by its Spanish name, Quita Mal.
Keep Away Evil goes with rue, a strong-smelling herb, and with the broom, the oldest guards against envy in a Mexican home. Many families use it on a Tuesday or a Friday, the days kept for cleansing, with a sprig of rue in water by the front door. Its candle is white. The oil is clear, with a frankincense and myrrh scent.
Ways to use
- In mop water and around the house
- Add a few drops to a bucket of mop water, with a sprig of rue if you have it. Mop from the back of the house to the front door, then throw the water out into the street.
- On doors and windows
- Once the house is mopped, mark a small cross with the oil on the front door frame and run a line along the threshold, so what went out stays out.
- On charm bags, stones and medals
- Put a drop on an azabache (a black jet charm against the evil eye) or an eye charm, and hang it by the baby's crib. Add another drop every Friday.
- In your wallet or business
- For a business that just opened, put a drop on the front door frame and in the corners of the register, where other people's envy tends to land.
