About this salt
Archangel Raphael salt is for the family of someone who is leaving. In the Book of Tobit the archangel walks beside young Tobias, unrecognized, to a far city and home again, so people pray to him for travelers. Families pick it up the week before a long drive, a flight or a pilgrimage, or when a son or daughter moves away for work or school. Some also ask him to lead them to a good husband or wife, as he led Tobias to Sarah.
Salt goes where the traveler crosses: the front door. Many sprinkle a thin line across the threshold the night before the trip, so the person steps over it on the way out. A small dish of salt then stays by the door, beside his holy card, for as long as they are gone.
For a long absence, the dish is changed every week. When the traveler is home, the line and the old salt are swept out the front door together, and the dish is washed and put away. His feast is September 29, with Michael and Gabriel, and many still keep his old day, October 24. His candles are green and white.
Ways to use
- Across the threshold
- The night before the trip, sprinkle a thin line of salt across the front door. Ask the archangel to go out that door with them.
- A dish by the door
- Set a small dish of salt by the door with his holy card or medal beside it. Change the salt every week until they are back.
- The room they left
- When someone has moved far away, sprinkle a little in the corners of the room they left. Sweep it out and renew it once a week.
- The day they come home
- Sweep the salt out the front door toward the street, wash the dish, and light a white candle in thanks.
Goes with
Put a few drops of Archangel Raphael oil on a green or white seven-day candle while the salt keeps the door. Guardian Angel goes with the traveler in the car, Open Road is for a trip that starts a new life, and Bless This Home is for the homecoming.
