About this salt
Our Lady of Charity of El Cobre is the patroness of Cuba. Around 1612, three men in a small boat, remembered as the three Juans, were caught in a storm in the Bay of Nipe. When the sea calmed, they found her image floating on a board that read “I am the Virgin of Charity.” Since then Cubans have called on her in every storm, on the island and far from it, and many call her Cachita with love.
This is sea salt, for the Virgin who came in from the sea. Families keep it at home when a relative is on the way from the island, when loved ones are still there, or when hurricane season comes. A small dish of salt sits beside her image with yellow flowers, often sunflowers, and a little goes at the front door and in the corners of the house.
Change the dish when you change her flowers, about once a week, and sweep the doorway out to the street at the same time. Always put down fresh salt for her feast, September 8. Many begin her novena on August 30, so the nine days of prayer end on the eve of the feast. Her candles are yellow and white. In Santería she is also honored as Oshún.
Ways to use
- On her altar
- Set a small dish of salt beside her image and her yellow flowers. Change the salt each time you change the flowers.
- At the front door
- When a storm is coming or someone is on the way, sprinkle a thin line across the threshold and say her name.
- For family far away
- Write the names of your relatives on the island on a slip of paper, set it under her candle, and keep the dish of salt beside it.
- For her feast
- On August 30, the first night of her novena, sweep out the old salt and put down fresh for September 8.
Goes with
Put a few drops of Our Lady of Charity oil on a yellow seven-day candle beside the dish of salt. In many Cuban homes her candle burns next to St. Lazarus, and those who honor her in Santería keep Oshún close by.
