About this oil
St. Lazarus, San Lázaro, is one of the most loved devotions in Cuba and among Cubans everywhere. He is honored as the poor Lazarus of the Gospel, who waited at the rich man's gate with only the dogs for company. People turn to him in the hardest times, for family in trouble, and for the humble and forgotten. Many make him a promise and keep it for years.
His feast is December 17. The night before, thousands walk to his shrine at El Rincón, outside Havana, many of them in purple. His color is purple, and his statue stands with two dogs at his side. In Santería he is honored as Babalú Ayé. The oil is purple, with a warm ylang and ginger scent.
Ways to use
- On the altar and saint statues
- On December 17, put a drop on the base of his statue and on the purple candle in front of it. Keep the oil off the saint's face.
- With a written prayer or photo
- Write your request and the promise you are making him on the same paper. Put a drop on each corner and keep it under his candle.
- On a candle
- On the evening of December 16, put a few drops on a purple seven-day candle so it burns through his feast day.
- With offerings
- When you keep your promise, put a drop on the flowers you bring him, or on a white candle lit in thanks.
