About this oil
7 African Powers is for the times when everything goes wrong at once: work, money, the house and love, all in the same season. With it, people call on seven orishas together, the holy spirits honored in Santería. Most often they are Elegguá, Obatalá, Changó, Oggún, Orula, Yemayá and Ochún. Each one looks after a different part of life. Elegguá opens the roads, so he is always greeted first.
For anything more than a candle at home, people go to a santero or santera, a priest of Santería. At home, the oil goes with the seven-color candle, one color for each Power. Fruit, a glass of water and candy for Elegguá go beside it. The oil is clear and smells of frankincense and myrrh.
Ways to use
- On a candle
- Put a few drops on a seven-color candle and spread the oil over it. As you do, say a few words to each of the Powers, starting with Elegguá.
- With a written prayer or photo
- On a piece of paper, write each trouble on its own line: the job, the rent, the house, the marriage. Set the paper under the seven-color candle.
- On the altar and saint statues
- Put a drop on the base of the Seven Powers statue or on the corners of the holy card, and on the candle in front of it. Don't put oil on the faces.
- With offerings
- When you leave fruit for the Powers, put a drop on the edge of the plate. Elegguá's candy goes by the front door, because he guards the way in.
