About this oil
St. Barbara is the virgin martyr who kept her faith while locked in a tower, and the saint people call on when a storm comes up. Devotees ask her to keep the family safe from lightning, fire and sudden danger. Miners, firefighters and people with dangerous jobs keep her close. Families come for her oil when someone they love faces danger every day, or when trouble has come on fast.
Her feast day is December 4. She is shown beside a tower with three windows, for the Holy Trinity, holding a sword and a chalice. Her colors are red and white. In Santería, many devotees also honor Changó through her image. The oil is red, with a rose scent.
Ways to use
- On the altar and saint statues
- Put a drop on the base of her statue and on the red candle in front of it. Keep the oil off her face.
- On a candle
- On December 4, or when a big storm is on the way, put a few drops on a red seven-day candle and pray to her for everyone in the house.
- On doors and windows
- When storms are coming, trace a small cross of oil on the front door frame and ask St. Barbara to watch over the house.
- With offerings
- Many devotees bring her red apples or red flowers. Put a drop on the flowers or on the edge of the plate.
