About this oil
Oshún is the orisha of the river and of fresh water in Santería, the faith that came to Cuba from the Yoruba of West Africa. She is honored for love, sweetness, joy and plenty. Devotees light a candle for her when they want sweetness in love, peace in the family or some ease with money. In Cuba she is celebrated together with Our Lady of Charity, la Caridad del Cobre, on September 8.
Her colors are yellow and gold, and her number is five. Devotees bring her honey, sunflowers, oranges or a pumpkin, often five of something. A candle with her oil on the home altar is a simple act of devotion. Anything more, like receiving her, is done with a santero or santera. The oil is gold.
Ways to use
- On a candle
- Put five drops on a yellow seven-day candle and light it for her on the home altar, with a few sunflowers or yellow flowers beside it.
- With offerings
- Put a drop on the rim of the small dish of honey you leave for her, or on the stems of the flowers you bring. Keep the offering fresh and clean.
- On the altar and saint statues
- On September 8, put a drop on the base of the statue of Our Lady of Charity and on the candle in front of her.
