About this oil

Obatalá is the orisha of peace, wisdom and clear thinking in Santería, the eldest and calmest of the orishas, often called the father of them all. Devotees turn to him when a home has too much arguing, when a decision needs a calm mind, or in a hard season. In Cuba he is honored with Our Lady of Mercy, la Virgen de las Mercedes, on September 24.

Everything for Obatalá is white: white cloth, white flowers, cotton, coconut and cascarilla, a white chalk made from eggshell. His number is eight. A white candle with his oil at home is a simple devotion; receiving him or anything more is done with a santero or santera. The oil is clear, with a frankincense and myrrh scent.

Ways to use

On a candle
Put eight drops on a white seven-day candle and set it on a clean white cloth, with a little cotton beside the glass.
With offerings
Put a drop on the white flowers you bring him, or on the rim of a plate of white rice or coconut. Keep everything around his candle clean.
On the altar and saint statues
On September 24, put a drop on the base of the statue of Our Lady of Mercy and on the white candle in front of her.
In mop water and around the house
After a hard argument in the house, add a few drops to the mop water and mop from the back toward the front door, then throw the water out.
