About this oil
Yemayá is the orisha of the sea, honored in Santería as mother of all. People come to her about what a mother cares for: the children, the family, a loved one crossing the water. Devotees use the oil to honor her and ask for her care. In Cuba she is honored together with the Virgin of Regla, on September 7.
Her colors are blue and white, and her number is seven. Her offerings are sweet things and things of the sea: white flowers on the water, molasses, watermelon, seashells. At home, people light her a blue or white candle with a glass of water. For anything more than a candle at home, people go to a santero or santera, a priest of Santería. The oil is blue.
Ways to use
- On a candle
- Put seven drops on a blue or white seven-day candle, her number, and set a glass of fresh water beside it. Light it on September 7 or on a Saturday.
- On the altar and saint statues
- Put a drop on the base of her image or on the seashells on her altar, and keep the altar cloth blue and white and clean.
- With offerings
- When you bring her white flowers or a slice of watermelon, put a drop on the rim of the plate. Flowers can also go to the sea, as many devotees do.
