About this oil
Our Lady of San Juan de los Lagos is a small image of the Immaculate Conception, made in the 1500s by Purépecha craftsmen from a paste of corn stalk. She is kept in her basilica in Los Altos de Jalisco, and every year more than a million pilgrims come to her, many on foot for days, to keep a promise, a manda. People bring her a relative who is traveling, family working far from home, or just their thanks.
Her main feast is February 2, Candelaria, and many also keep August 15 and December 8. Devotees call her la Sanjuanita. Her candles are white and blue, the colors of the Immaculate Conception. The oil is clear, with a frankincense and myrrh scent.
Ways to use
- On the altar and saint statues
- Put a drop on the base of her image or on the corners of her holy card, and on the candle in front of her. Leave her face alone.
- On a candle
- Start her novena on January 24 and pray the nine nights up to February 1, the eve of her feast. Put a few drops on a white seven-day candle the first night.
- In the car
- Before a long drive or a pilgrimage, put a drop on her medal or holy card and keep it in the glove box for the trip.
- With a written prayer or photo
- Write the names of those who are traveling or living far away, put a drop on each corner, and set the paper beside her candle.
