About this oil
Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared to St. Juan Diego on the hill of Tepeyac in 1531, and left her image on his cloak, the tilma, among roses picked in December. For millions of families she is the mother who looks after them, and people bring her everything: a son working far away, a family split by a border, a promise made years ago and kept every year since.
Her feast is December 12. On the night before, families and parishes sing her Las Mañanitas into the morning. Roses are her flower, and her candles are white and red. The oil is clear, with a frankincense and myrrh scent, the smell of church incense.
Ways to use
- On the altar and saint statues
- Put a drop on the base of her image or on the corners of her holy card, and on the candle in front of her. Leave her face alone.
- With offerings
- Put a drop on the roses you bring her, on December 12 or on any day you have something to thank her for.
- On a candle
- Put a few drops on a white seven-day candle when you begin a novena, nine days of prayer, or make a promise to her.
- With a written prayer or photo
- Write the names of the family members you are praying for, especially those far from home, and set the paper beside her candle.
