About this oil
Three Kings is the oil for Día de Reyes, January 6, when the Wise Men reached the Christ Child with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. People use it to bless the year ahead: for guidance, the way the star led the Kings, and for a year of plenty in the house. Families reach for it when they bless the house in January and when they start something new early in the year.
On the feast, many Catholic families bless the front door by writing the year and the letters C+M+B over it in chalk, for Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar. The rosca de reyes is cut that day. Its candle is gold or white. The oil is gold, like the Kings' first gift.
Ways to use
- On doors and windows
- On January 6, after the door is chalked, put a drop on each side of the frame and one at the top, one for each King.
- On a candle
- On the eve of Reyes, put a few drops on a gold or white candle and let it burn into the first days of the year.
- In your wallet or business
- Put a drop on the first bill you earn in January and keep it folded in your wallet all year.
- With a written prayer or photo
- Write three wishes for the year, one for each King, and set the paper under the candle.
