About this oil
San Simón, also called Maximón, is a folk saint from the highlands of Guatemala. His devotees call him Hermano San Simón and bring him plain, everyday requests: a job, customers for a business that is slow, money to make the month, a safe trip, a court date, a love that went cold. People who grew up with him keep his statue in homes and botanicas far from Guatemala.
His day is October 28, the big day at his shrine in San Andrés Itzapa. Each candle color carries its own request: green for business and money, red for love, yellow for protection. Devotees leave him a cigar, a small glass of liquor, bread, flowers and a few coins. The oil is green, with a fresh clover scent.
Ways to use
- On a candle
- Choose the candle by what you are asking: green for business or money, red for love, yellow for protection. Put a few drops on it and tell him your request in your own words.
- On the altar and saint statues
- Put a drop at the base of his statue and on the candle in front of him. Many devotees greet him as Hermano before they ask.
- With offerings
- When you leave him his cigar, his drink or his bread, put a drop on the flowers and the coins beside them. Keep the oil off the cigar.
- In your wallet or business
- Put a drop on the first bill of the day and on the corners of the register, with his picture close by.
