About this oil

Scare Away the Dead is the oil people use to keep wandering spirits away from the house. People reach for it after a funeral, when they move into a place where someone passed away, or when the house feels heavy: a door that won't stay shut, one room that always feels cold, children who don't want to be alone at night.

It goes with a white candle and a glass of clear water, and many people pray for the soul while it burns: an Our Father or a rosary. The idea is to send the spirit on its way with respect, not with fear. Most people do it in the evening. The oil is clear, with a frankincense and myrrh scent.

Ways to use

On doors and windows
After the funeral or the move, put a drop at the top of every door frame and in the corners of each windowsill, then a line across the front doorstep.
In mop water and around the house
Add a few drops to the mop water and mop from the back of the house toward the front door. Throw the water out the door and pray as you do it.
On a candle
Put a few drops on a white seven-day candle and set a glass of clear water beside it. Change the water every day until the candle burns out.
