About this oil
St. Francis of Assisi is the saint people go to for their animals. Families pray to him when a new dog or cat comes home, when an old one is getting on in years, and when one is buried in the yard. Others come for the saint himself: the poor friar who preached to the birds and called the sun his brother. The prayer "Lord, make me an instrument of your peace" carries his name.
His feast is October 4, and many parishes bless animals that day or the nearest Sunday. He is remembered for making peace between the wolf of Gubbio and the town. His candle is brown, like his Franciscan habit. The oil is blue, for the peace he prayed for.
Ways to use
- On the altar and saint statues
- Many keep his statue in the garden, among the plants and the birds. On October 4, put a drop on its base and on the candle beside it. Leave the saint's face alone.
- On a candle
- When an animal joins the family, or when one has died, put a few drops on a brown or blue seven-day candle. Set the animal's photo under the glass and say its name.
- With a written prayer or photo
- Write the name of every animal in the house on one paper, the old ones and the new. Put a drop on each corner and keep it under his candle.
- With offerings
- On his feast, bring fresh flowers to his statue and put a drop on the rim of the vase. Keep the oil away from the animals' food and water.
