About this oil
St. Benedict, father of the Benedictine monks, is the saint families call on to keep evil out of the house. His medal, with the cross on one side and old Latin prayers against evil around the edge, is one of the most loved in the Church. People hang it over the front door, keep it in the car, and give it to a son or daughter leaving home.
His feast is July 11. The stories of his life tell of a cup of poisoned wine that broke when he blessed it, and of a raven that carried away poisoned bread, so the cup and the raven appear with him. His candle is white. The oil is clear, with a frankincense and myrrh scent, the smell of church incense.
Ways to use
- On doors and windows
- Hang a St. Benedict medal or cross over the front door. Put a drop on the medal and trace a small cross of oil on the frame below it.
- On charm bags, stones and medals
- Before you give a St. Benedict medal, for a new home, a new car or a child leaving home, put a drop on the back of it.
- In the car
- Put a drop on the medal kept in the glove box, and on each tire before a long trip.
- On the altar and saint statues
- Put a drop on the base of his statue and on the white candle in front of it. Leave the saint's face alone.
