About this oil
High Altar is the oil people use to bless and keep the altar at home: the shelf or table where the family keeps its saints, candles, holy water and photographs. People reach for it when they set up a new altar, when they bring home a new statue, or when they move and set the altar up again. Many use it before a novena or an important prayer.
Its name comes from the main altar of a church, and it brings that same care into the house. It goes with white candles, a clean white cloth and fresh flowers. Many people freshen the altar on the first of the month or before a feast day. The oil is clear, with a frankincense and myrrh scent, the smell of church incense.
Ways to use
- On the altar and saint statues
- When you set up the altar or bring home a new saint, put a drop on the base of each statue and on the corners of the holy cards. Keep the oil off the faces and the cloth.
- On a candle
- Put a few drops on the white seven-day candle that stays lit on the altar, and say a short prayer as you light it.
- On charm bags, stones and medals
- Put a drop on a rosary, a saint medal or a small cross that lives on the altar, then set it back in its place.
- With offerings
- When you change the flowers or the glass of water, put a drop on the fresh flowers and on the rim of the glass.
