About this oil
Ancestors is the oil for honoring the family who have passed: parents and grandparents, a brother gone too soon, great-grandparents known only from stories. People use it to keep their memory present in the house, to thank them, and to ask them to watch over the family. Many bring it home when they set up an altar for a loved one, or in the weeks before Día de Muertos.
The ancestor altar is simple: photographs, a white candle, a glass of fresh water and flowers. In Mexican homes the flowers are marigolds, cempasúchil, on November 1 and 2. In Espiritismo, families keep a small table with glasses of water for their departed. The oil is purple, with a warm ylang and ginger scent.
Ways to use
- On the altar and saint statues
- Put a drop on the corners of each picture frame and on the white candle in front of the photographs. Keep the photographs themselves clean.
- With offerings
- When you change the glass of water or bring fresh flowers, put a drop on the flowers and on the rim of the glass. Bring them a food they loved, too.
- On a candle
- On a birthday or the anniversary of a passing, put a few drops on a white seven-day candle and say their name as you light it.
- With a written prayer or photo
- On one sheet of paper, write the names of your family who have passed, as many as you can remember. Put a drop on it and keep it under the candle on the altar.
