About this oil
Van Van is one of the oldest oils from New Orleans, and still one of the most asked for. It does two jobs at once: it clears away bad luck, and it calls good luck in. People reach for it when nothing has gone right for a while, when they start something new, or when a lucky charm they have carried for years needs fresh oil.
The name is thought to come from verveine, the French word for vervain, an herb long used in New Orleans. People put Van Van on lodestones, horseshoes and lucky coins to keep them strong, and on the doorstep of a new home or shop. Its candle is yellow or white. The oil is gold, the color of the luck it is used for.
Ways to use
- On charm bags, stones and medals
- Put a drop on a lodestone (a magnetic stone), a lucky coin or a horseshoe, and another drop every week on the same day, to keep the charm strong.
- On doors and windows
- When you move into a new home or open a shop, run a thin line of Van Van along the doorstep, so the old bad luck stays outside.
- In mop water and around the house
- After a bad run, add a few drops to the mop water. Mop from the back of the house to the front door and throw the water out.
- On a candle
- Put a few drops on a yellow or white candle on the day you start something new: a job, a lease, a business.
