About this oil
Our Lady of Juquila is a small image of the Virgin, about a foot tall, in the mountain town of Santa Catarina Juquila, Oaxaca. Pilgrims travel for days to reach her. Many stop first at El Pedimento, a hill nearby where people shape little clay houses, cars and animals for what they ask of her. Oaxacan families in Los Angeles keep her devotion, and come for her oil when they make her a promise or can't make the trip to see her.
She is honored as the Immaculate Conception. Her feast is December 8, and pilgrims sing her Las Mañanitas at dawn. Her candles are white, like her wide mantle embroidered in gold. The oil is clear, with a frankincense and myrrh scent.
Ways to use
- On a candle
- Start her novena, nine days of prayer, on November 29 with a few drops on a white seven-day candle. The nine days end the night before her feast.
- With a written prayer or photo
- If you can't go to El Pedimento, write what you are asking her for on a small paper. Put a drop on each corner and keep it under her candle.
- On charm bags, stones and medals
- Put a drop on the back of her medal, or on a keepsake someone brought back from her shrine, and keep it on your altar.
- With offerings
- On December 8, put a drop on the white flowers you bring her and on the rim of the vase.
