About this oil
Our Lady of Carmen is Our Lady of Mount Carmel, patroness of the Carmelite order. Her best-known sign is the brown scapular, two small squares of brown cloth on cords. Sailors and fishermen have prayed to her for centuries, and in Colombia drivers and truckers keep her as their patroness. People come for her oil when someone they love makes a living on the water or the highway, or before a long trip.
Her feast is July 16, and her novena, nine days of prayer, begins July 7. On her day, drivers bring their trucks, buses and motorcycles to church to be blessed. The white lily is her flower. Her candles are white, or brown like her habit. The oil is clear, with a frankincense and myrrh scent.
Ways to use
- In the car
- On July 16, or before a long drive, put a drop on each of the four tires. Keep her holy card or medal in the glove box with a drop on the back.
- On a candle
- Begin her novena on July 7 with a few drops on a white seven-day candle, so the nine days end on the eve of her feast.
- With a written prayer or photo
- Write the names of the people you pray for who drive, fish or travel far, and keep the paper under her candle until the trip is over.
- With offerings
- On her feast, put a drop on the white lilies you bring her and on the rim of the vase.
