About this oil
Our Lady of Charity of El Cobre is the patroness of Cuba. Around 1612, three men in a small boat, remembered as the three Juans, were caught in a storm in the Bay of Nipe. When the sea calmed, they found her image floating on a board that read "I am the Virgin of Charity." Since then Cubans have called on her in every storm, on the island and far from it, and many call her Cachita with love.
Her feast is September 8, and her shrine stands in El Cobre, an old copper-mining town. Devotees bring her yellow flowers, often sunflowers. Her candles are yellow and white. In Santería she is also honored as Oshún. The oil is gold, her color.
Ways to use
- On the altar and saint statues
- Put a drop on the base of her image and on the candle in front of her. Keep the oil off her face and the Child's.
- On a candle
- Begin her novena on August 30, so the nine days of prayer end on the eve of her feast. Put a few drops on a yellow seven-day candle the first night.
- With offerings
- On September 8, put a drop on the sunflowers or yellow flowers you bring her, and on the rim of the vase.
