About this oil
Great Power is the oil for devotion to Jesús del Gran Poder, Christ of the Great Power: Jesus crowned with thorns, bent under the cross and still walking. People come for it when their own load is too much: a long stretch without work, trouble in the family, a fight that won't end. They pray to him for strength, protection and guidance on the road.
The devotion comes from Seville, Spain, where for centuries his image has gone out into the streets in the early hours of Good Friday. In La Paz, Bolivia, he has a great festival every year. Devotees pray to him on Fridays and in Holy Week. His candle is red, like his garnet robe, or white. The oil is red, with a sweet rose scent.
Ways to use
- On a candle
- On a Friday, and above all on Good Friday, put a few drops on a red candle and pray to him before you light it.
- With a written prayer or photo
- Write down the load you are carrying, in your own words, and put a drop on each corner of the paper. Fold it and keep it under his candle until the candle is done.
- On the altar and saint statues
- Put a drop on the base of his statue or the frame of his picture, never on his face.
- On doors and windows
- When the whole house is going through a hard time, put a drop on the frame of the front door and ask him to watch over everyone who lives there.
