About this oil
St. Michael oil is for devotion to the archangel who defends against evil, the prince of the heavenly host. People pick it up when the house feels heavy, or when they believe someone has sent harm their way. Parents use it when a son or daughter goes out each day to dangerous work. Many pray the prayer of Pope Leo XIII, “St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle,” as they light his candle.
His feast is September 29, shared with the archangels Gabriel and Raphael. Tuesday is the day traditionally set aside for the holy angels. His candle burns before his holy card or statue, in blue or red, with a white one beside it for peace. The oil is blue, one of his traditional colors.
Ways to use
- On the altar and saint statues
- On a Tuesday, put a drop on the base of his statue or the corners of his holy card. Pray to him by name before you light his candle.
- On a candle
- Put a few drops on his seven-day candle, or a blue or white one, and pray the prayer of Leo XIII as you light it. Many keep a candle burning through his novena, the nine days of prayer that end the night before his feast.
- On doors and windows
- Trace a small cross with the oil on the front door frame. Ask St. Michael to stand guard over the house and everyone in it.
- On charm bags, stones and medals
- Put a drop on a St. Michael medal for someone who goes out to dangerous work, and keep it in their wallet or glove box. Add a fresh drop every Tuesday.
