About this oil
Elegguá is the orisha who owns the roads, the crossroads and the doors. In Santería he is always greeted first, because nothing moves without him. People come to him when the roads seem closed: no work, no luck, papers stuck, every door shut. He is often seen as a child, playful and quick, so devotees come to him with affection and respect.
His colors are red and black, and Monday is his day. In many homes he lives on the floor behind the front door, guarding the way in. His offerings are simple: candy, a cigar, a little rum, a small toy. To receive Elegguá, or for anything beyond a candle at home, people go to a santero or santera, a priest of Santería. The oil is orange.
Ways to use
- On doors and windows
- On a Monday, put a drop on the frame of the front door and greet Elegguá as you open it in the morning.
- On a candle
- Put a few drops on a red and black seven-day candle and light it on a Monday, before any other candle in the house.
- With offerings
- On Mondays, leave a few pieces of candy for him by the front door, and put a drop of oil on the rim of the dish.
