About this oil
The Holy Child of Atocha, the Santo Niño de Atocha, is the Christ Child as a pilgrim, with a basket of bread and a gourd of water. The devotion goes back to Atocha in Spain, where a child is said to have brought food and water to prisoners when no one else could. Devotees pray to him for loved ones in prison, for travelers and migrants on the road, and for anyone lost or far from home.
His great shrine is at Plateros, near Fresnillo in Zacatecas, where pilgrims keep their promises. Devotees say he walks out at night to help, and his little shoes get worn down, so many bring him new ones, with bread, water, candy and toys. His candle is blue or white. The oil is blue.
Ways to use
- On the altar and saint statues
- Put a drop on the base of his statue and on the candle in front of it, never on his face or his clothes.
- With offerings
- When you bring him a new pair of little shoes, bread or a glass of water, put a drop on the edge of the dish or inside the shoe box.
- With a written prayer or photo
- Write the name of the person in prison or on the road, and where they are. Put a drop on the paper and keep it under his candle.
- In the car
- Before a long trip, put a drop on a small medal of the Santo Niño and keep it in the glove box.
