About this oil
Mal de ojo, the evil eye, is the harm that can come from a heavy look, full of envy or even too much admiration. Grandmothers worry about it most for babies and small children, but people also feel it on a new car, a new business or a good run at work. Against Evil Eye is the oil people use to keep that look from landing.
The tradition has many guards against it: the azabache (a black jet charm), the ojo de venado (a large brown seed on a red string), a blue eye bead by the door, and a sprig of rue. People put the oil on the charm and on the doors. The oil is blue, like the eye bead.
Ways to use
- On charm bags, stones and medals
- Put a drop on an azabache or an ojo de venado and pin it to the crib or the stroller. Add a drop every week.
- On doors and windows
- Hang a blue eye bead over the front door and put a drop on the frame beside it.
- In the car
- For a new car, put a drop on each tire, and hang a small eye bead from the mirror with a drop of oil on its string.
- In your wallet or business
- In a new shop, put a drop on the corners of the counter, where customers stand and look the longest.
