About this oil
Sweeten is the oil for getting back someone's good will. People reach for it after a falling-out: a sister who won't speak to them, a mother-in-law who finds fault with everything, a landlord or coworker who has turned cold. It is used to ask that person to ease up, listen, forgive and be kind again. Couples use it too, after a bad fight.
In Spanish it is Endulzamiento, the old custom of sweetening someone. Love Honey goes with the honey jar; Sweeten goes with sugar and cinnamon. A name on paper is buried in a dish of sugar on the altar, with two cinnamon sticks crossed on top. The oil is pink like its candle, the color of affection and making up.
Ways to use
- With a written prayer or photo
- Write the person's full name on paper. Put a drop on each corner and one in the center, fold it toward you, and bury it in a small dish of sugar on the altar. Keep that sugar apart from the kitchen.
- On a candle
- Put a few drops on a pink seven-day candle and set it beside the dish of sugar. When it burns out, light a new one for as long as you are asking.
- On doors and windows
- Before a relative or in-law comes to visit, put a drop at the top and on each side of the front door, asking that they come in with kind words.
