About this oil
St. Raymond Nonnatus, San Ramón Nonato, was a friar who gave himself as a hostage to free Christian captives. His name means "not born": tradition says his mother died before he came into the world. So expectant mothers and their families pray to him through the months of waiting. Tradition also says his captors locked his mouth with a padlock to stop him preaching. People turn to him when gossip or false talk is hurting their name.
His feast day is August 31. In Mexico, devotees leave a small closed padlock at his altar and ask that the talk stop. His candle is red, for his cardinal's cape, with a white one for giving thanks. The oil is red, with a rose scent.
Ways to use
- On the altar and saint statues
- Put a drop on the base of his statue or the corners of his holy card, and on the candle in front of him. Keep the oil off his face.
- On a candle
- On the 31st of the month, put a few drops on a red seven-day candle and pray to him for the mother and the baby on the way.
- With offerings
- When the worry is gossip, bring him a small padlock. Put a drop on it, close it, and leave it in front of his statue.
- With a written prayer or photo
- Write what is being said about you, not who is saying it. Put a drop on the paper, fold it shut and keep it under his candle.
