About this oil
St. Charbel was a Lebanese monk who spent his last twenty-three years as a hermit in the mountains of Annaya, in silence and prayer. Lebanese families brought his devotion to Mexico, and today his statues there are covered in ribbons. Each ribbon carries a request written in pen: for work, for a marriage, for a son far away. People reach for his oil when they have something to ask and want to ask it quietly.
His feast is July 24. Next to the colored ribbon of the request, devotees tie a white one to thank him ahead of time. The Church reminds the faithful that the prayer matters more than the color. His candle is white. The oil is clear, with a scent of frankincense and myrrh.
Ways to use
- With a written prayer or photo
- Write your request in pen on a ribbon in the color of what you are asking for, with a white ribbon beside it to give thanks. Put a drop of oil on the end of each ribbon before you tie them.
- On the altar and saint statues
- At home, tie the ribbons around the base of his statue. Put a drop on the base and on the white candle in front of him, and keep the oil off his face.
- On a candle
- On July 24, or on the first day of his novena, put a few drops on a white seven-day candle and pray to him while it burns.
