About this oil

Snake is the oil people reach for when someone close is talking behind their back. A coworker spreads stories, a relative is eaten up with envy, a friend smiles at you and then turns away. In Spanish that person is called a víbora, a snake, and the tradition answers the snake with the snake. People use it for protection, to stop the gossip from spreading and to see who is who.

Snake is an old oil in Mexican botanicas. Tuesday is its day, the day for standing firm against enemies. It goes with a red candle for strength, or a black one when the gossip needs to be sent back. The oil is gold. In the tradition the snake is a guardian: quiet, watchful, and best not stepped on.

Ways to use

On a candle
On a Tuesday, put a few drops on a red seven-day candle for protection. To send the gossip back, use a black candle and spread the oil on it in strokes away from you.
With a written prayer or photo
On brown paper, write down what is being said, not the person's name. Put a drop on it, fold it away from you and set it under the candle.
On doors and windows
When the gossip has reached your home, draw a small cross with the oil on the front door frame so it stays outside.
On charm bags, stones and medals
Put a drop on an azabache, the black jet charm against the evil eye, or on a saint medal. Keep it at work, in a desk drawer or locker, where the talk goes around.
