About this oil
Hot Foot is the oil people reach for when one person keeps coming back to the same place: the neighbor always leaning on the gate, the relative who came for a week and never left, someone who hangs around outside the shop every day. It is used on the doorstep and the path to the door, so that person stops coming around and moves on. The wish is for them to go on their way, nothing more.
Hot Foot comes from Southern hoodoo. Its old recipes were made hot with red and black pepper, which gave it the name. Its candle is black, and many people burn it a little each night for nine nights. The oil is purple, with a warm ylang-ylang and ginger scent.
Ways to use
- On doors and windows
- Run a thin line of oil across the doorstep or the gate where that person comes in. Finish at the back door, the door the tradition uses for sending things out.
- On a candle
- Use a plain black candle and spread the oil along it away from you. Set a pinch of salt and red pepper on the plate around it, and burn it a little each night for nine nights.
- With a written prayer or photo
- Write the person's name nine times on brown paper, put a drop of oil on it and fold it away from you. Keep it under the candle, and after the ninth night take it to running water, like a creek or a river, to be carried off.
