About this oil

St. Alex, San Alejo, was a nobleman of Rome who gave everything up to live as a poor pilgrim. Tradition says he came home years later and lived unknown under the stairs of his father's house until he died. In Spanish his name sounds like alejar, to keep away. So people pray to him to keep enemies, bad company and gossip away from them and their family.

His feast day is July 17. Devotees keep his holy card or statue on the home altar, often near the front door, and pray his prayer when someone unwelcome keeps coming around. His candle is white, or brown for his pilgrim's robe. The oil is clear, with a frankincense and myrrh scent, the smell of church incense.

Ways to use

On the altar and saint statues
Put a drop on the base of his statue or the corners of his holy card, and on the candle in front of him. Keep the oil off his face.
On a candle
On the 17th of the month, put a few drops on a white candle for him and pray his prayer.
With a written prayer or photo
Write the name of the person or the trouble you want kept away. Fold the paper away from you and keep it under his candle.
On doors and windows
Put a drop on each side of the front door frame while you ask him to keep trouble from coming in.
